May Andersen

Biography

May Andersen (born Lykke May Andersen on June 16, 1982 in Copenhagen, Denmark) is a Danish supermodel. She is most known for her work with Victoria's Secret and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Despite her recent air rage arrest, her newfound notoriety has not changed her status of officially being used for publicizing the Danish tourism program: "Who doesn't like a Dane?" [2] although her agency Elite Model Management tried to distance her and themselves from it by changing her official booking name to Lykke May after the arrest and subsequent publicity, in time for New York's Fashion Week in July 2006. [3]

Early life

As a child she wanted to be a singer and took vocal lessons. Her career goal changed dramatically when a photographer spotted her on a Copenhagen street at age thirteen. The photographer convinced her and her parents that she would have a good chance of having a successful career as a fashion model, despite her young age. The year she turned eighteen, she relocated to New York.

In the news

Car accident

In 2000 the car she was riding in was hit by a garbage truck on Sixth Avenue. She broke her collarbone, her wrist in three places, and sustained injuries to her pelvis. She later received compensation from the City of New York.

Anti-fur activists

Because she chooses to pose in fur fashions, she has been a target of animal rights activists. The most public example was in 2003 when she was sprayed in the face with tear gas during Fashion Week in Paris together with fellow model Devon Aoki.

Arrest and deportation

On April 20, 2006, May Andersen was arrested for hitting a flight attendant on a flight from Amsterdam to Miami. Andersen was aboard Martinair Flight 643 on Thursday. She was "loud and disruptive all throughout the flight," according to a Miami-Dade police spokeswoman. Airport police arrested Andersen when the flight landed. She continued her loud and unruly behavior with officers, police said. Andersen was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to check for signs of alcohol or drug abuse, then booked into Miami-Dade County Jail. [4]

Deported by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials to the Netherlands on Monday, April 24, after spending two nights in jail. She is charged with battery, resisting arrest and disorderly intoxication. Upon her return to the United States, she will have to stand trial.

On April 28, 2006, she appeared on Danish television [5], defending her behavior by stating that she could have pushed the flight attendant away accidentally while she slept, because he was bent over her attempting to adjust her seat. She also stated that she was awoken a second time by a police officer pulling her arm which could explain her unruly behavior because she did not understand the charge, and was separated from her girlfriend and still sleepy etc. In the TV-clip, pictures of her bruises were shown.

On July 25, 2006, in order to avoid a long and costly trial, she was offered a deal where she had to undergo an anger management course. Once completed, all charges would be dropped. The remaining charge, which there was evidence to support, was resisting arrest without violence. On August 1, 2006 it was confirmed that she had accepted the deal and would seek a course in New York, because the concept of such courses is unknown in Denmark. On September 20, 2006 the record on the Clerk of court page confirmed that she had completed the treatment of the undiagnosed psychological sickness. [6] (Record M06020827, dockets page).

TV character: Mae Anderson

On 21 September 2006, the American television series Six Degrees debuted on ABC with an opening scene of a character named Mae Anderson (played by Erika Christensen who is of Danish extraction), who after a night out carousing with friends, decides to hop on a garbage truck/street sweeper heading down Fifth Avenue toward Washington Square Park and take off her top, an act which gets her arrested. This bears several striking similarities with Andersen's own life, especially the car accident: The character's name, the actress's heritage, the garbage truck near Sixth Avenue, and an arrest (including scenes of her being identified by her mug shot in succeeding episodes).

Helena Christensen

Biography

Her father is Danish and her mother is Peruvian.

She stepped into the limelight in 1986 by claiming the title of Miss Denmark at age eighteen, and representing her country at the Miss Universe pageant. This provided an invaluable springboard to launch herself as an international model. She left her home soon afterwards to pursue modeling in Paris.

Christensen is considered to be one of the more prominent supermodels of the 1990s. She has appeared on many magazine covers and fashion campaigns. She was in the Victoria's Secret catalog and in their television commercials.

In 1991, she starred in the music video for Chris Isaak's song "Wicked Game". In the video, she is depicted as Isaak's lover. Christensen is topless for much of the video, though her nudity is relatively concealed with clever camera angles. It was decided that full frontal nudity would not be suitable for mainstream release. Viewers still reacted to Christensen's sexually suggestive performance, and the video was later featured on MTV's "Sexiest Video of All-Time".

Business

Christensen has an antiques shop in Manhattan and sells some of her clothes in her mother's Yo-Yo Second Hand Shop in Christianshavn.

Helena co-founded Nylon magazine as the original creative director with American entrepreneur, Mic Neumann. She has launched her own clothing line Christensen & Sigersen, with long-term friend Leif Sigersen. The pair also run Butik, a shop in New York.[1]

Breast cancer advocate

Christensen was in Ireland to launch the second Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign which involves the sale of exclusive designer t-shirts to raise millions for Action Breast Cancer (a project of the Irish Cancer Society) and Europa Donna Ireland to help younger women with breast cancer.[2]

Personal life

Christensen lived with the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, and has been romantically linked to Leonardo DiCaprio for a brief relationship and she has also been romantically linked to Billy Corgan. She has one child, son Mingus Luchien Reedus born October 22, 1999 with former model Norman Reedus. Norman and Helena split in 2003. Christensen dated Danish rock band Grand Avenue frontman Rasmus Walter-Hansen from 2004 to 2006.[3]

Helena has claimed on several occasions to be a cheese addict, admitting that: "There've been times when I've bought a whole pound of cheese and walked down the street and eaten it in one go... I think it's incredibly sensual."[4]

Christensen declares that: "Whenever my head is like a maze, I turn to the easy things in life, the things that mean the most to me: Sex and cheese. These things are connected. Truth be told, I love all cheese: French cheese, Italian cheese, even British cheese, but Danish cheese is the greatest. I get my best nightmares after I eat Danish cheese. Actually I've seriously thought about getting a cheese tattoo. A nice Edam on my shoulder, maybe."[5][6]

In June 2006, Christensen admitted to smoking cannabis, saying: "I wouldn’t say no if somebody passed me a joint." She claimed that models are attracted to the apparent glamour of Class A narcotics, but she didn't use them, telling Britain's Grazia magazine: "It was never a problem for me. I was brought up with a lot of discipline so I wasn’t attracted to it. But there were a lot of young, beautiful girls on the party scene, with a lot of drugs around. I’m not a saint, but drugs were never my thing."[7]

She drives a Morris Minor car at home in Monaco, and also has apartments in Copenhagen and Manhattan. Christensen is left-handed and is a fan of The Smiths and R.E.M.. She is also close friends with lead singer Michael Stipe
